I'm sure most of you have heard about the Mydoom virus, but just thought I'd mention that someone in the club racing community appears to have it - I just received a copy of it supposedly sent by Nick (I'm sure it wasn't, as this seems to be a virus which fakes the senders' address), so I can only assume that someone who knows both me and Nick has it. Check your systems, folks

GR - just run a virus check just in case but it came up OK - my em address is through my work so the virus shouldn't get through our firewall anyhow. Must be one of those that ramdomly uses peoples e-mails. Wasn't me! Nick www.ns-r.co.uk

Yep. It's a spoofed address. The virus scans an infected machine for email addresses (it searches your mailbox, all html files including those you've viewed, your address book, text files, etc) then spoofs the from: and to: addresses in an attempt to find a new gullible victim... It may just be somebody who once looked at Nicks or this website and nothing more. It's really hard to track down. This is a real problem for folk like me who run mail systems for big domains. I've been seeing mountains of mail going to stan@mycompany.co.uk and anna@mycustomer.org.uk, etc, etc. Clogs everything up right and proper. Can't wait till tomorrow night when it switches itself off. General advice should keep you safe from this. Don't open attachments you're not expecting, keep your virus signatures and software up to date and visit windowsupdate.microsoft.com regularly (or use the Automatic Updates feature in Windows XP)(it's free!).

Yeah, I was pretty sure it was spoofing his address - that was one of the few I've had which was aimed at my real address, though (as I use an SCR.co.uk one on the webite, it takes someone to have either e-mailed me personally, or at least to have looked at my forum profile to have any record of it on the system). I've been getting loads to adam@scottishclubracing.co.uk or fred@scottishclubracing.co.uk, etc, etc in the last day or too, so I know all about the domains thing - it's just inventing stuff! I'm just glad that so far only one of the domains I administer has been noticed by it... would drive me mad if it got any more of them (Just checked my mail and I have another one from "Nick" to me, and one to ted@scottishclubracing.co.uk... sigh...)

Saw this and thought I'd mention that I got a gobbledy-gook message and a gobbledy-gook attachment from a supposed "helen@smrc-uk.com". I also got others from other people I didn't know with gobbledy-gook. Strange![/i] I downloaded a mydoom virus checker from Microsoft that checks and then repairs if you have it. Also download Mailwasher which allows you to see your mail and select which you want to receive onto your computer. That'll stop mydoom!

Looks like there's another one on the loose - not sure what, as I didn't bother opening it to let Norton tell me its name ( ), but I've had four infected mails in the last 20 minutes, plus a bounced mail from someone who'd received the virus with the mail faked to look like it came from me. One of the mails came to my SCR address, and another one was supposedly from the SMRC, so it looks like this one's another one that's got someone in the club racing community. And as I wrote this another rejected one arrived, bounced from Alastair Hart (I don't have his e-mail address, so it's not me who's infected) - seems to be Netsky, according to Norton (figured it'd be a good idea to turn my e-mail protection back on for the moment, even though I normally have it off ) Damn viruses...

Just in case any of you don't have a virus checker or haven't bothered to shell out for the updates for your out of date anti-virus checker, you can get free anti-virus software here... www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.phpThe page explains how you get something for nothing. I've been using it trouble free on all my computers plus I install it for my home user customers, who haven't had any problems either. It includes an e-mail checker and is self updating provided you're connected to the interweb. If you're after the anti-virus version of a 'second opinion' and still want it free, then try uk.trendmicro-europe.com/consumer/products/housecall_launch.phpIt's self explanitory. Baz
