Back home now after 8 days up in the Highlands - had a great time there, and didn't want to come home Now I've got a heck of a lot of stuff to catch up on for my online racing league, two tracks to learn for races on Tuesday and Wednesday, a load of photos to scan that I didn't manage to finish before going away, plus three driver profiles to add to the website... and no, I haven't a clue when I'll get that far, though I'll do my best!

Been a bit busy lately... After spending most of the last 2 months plumbing it up, last weekend I finally got the engine running in my Ultima! It seemed a little reluctant to get going but eventually (after a flat battery ) it coughed into life. So far apart from a dodgy cooling fan connector, a lose water pipe clamp and a small slow oil leak it seems to be in rude health. So far I don't seem to have made too many other mistakes! Recorded a couple of clips of it starting: fiddes.net/ultima/ultima-start.mp3 and fiddes.net/ultima/ultima-rev.mp3 in case anyone is interested . For 6.3l its a lot quieter than I expected! Went to see the guys at Glenvarigill Porsche to sort out bits for my clutch. Very helpful and knowledgeable guys. Their service manager seemed more interested in my beast than the 911 GT2, in black with a stainless steel rollcage that was parked in front of his desk... Here's a sort of a current picture: Just got to get the interior carpeted (), alarm fitted, windows glazed and the appropriate government officials bribed....and I might just make it on the road at least before the end of the season.

Dave interested to hear what you said about Glenvarigill – Obviously they must have imported someone NEW because knowledgeable is not an adjective I’d use to describe them!!
If you want real knowledge contact Brian Miller at The Lane, 2C Lanark Road Edinburgh EH14. Brian was a mechanic with Glen Henderson then Service manager. Moved to Cameron in Perth when Hendersons folded. When Glenvarigill got the Porsche Franchise for Edinburgh he set up on his own. I had a few problems with Glenvarigill’s lack of knowledge with my Turbo, I found out later they were phoning Brian after they spoke to me. They still tried to sell me a £ 1500 controller that Brian told them had only ever failed on the first car imported to Britain and never since. Turned out to be a simple cigar lighter shorting fault. He has saved me a fortune compared to Glenvarigill and is a great source of knowledge and contacts well worth a call.

OK. They may not be the best and I did know exactly what I was looking for but... They were quite happy to dig out drawings and the like with part numbers and let me pore over it with their parts guy to make sure I was getting the correct bits. The prices for the bits I needed were quite reasonable. Of all the dealers I've had dealings with in the Edinburgh area (Audi, Volvo and Ford) they were the most helpful with my oddball requests. They also seemed to give a stuff about fast cars in general which was a plus. YMMV. OTOH I know someone else who has had a lot of problems with oil leaks on his 996 Turbo and getting them to fix it. Glenvarigill are infinitely better than the ripoff merchants I have got parts from down south. Thanks for the heads-up on Brian Miller though! I wished I'd had that info 6 months ago... I guess I'm probably going to go through a few boxes, clutches (hopefully more of the latter than the former) and I've got cunning plans to upgrade my std non-LSD box to use a Quaife ATB diff... Knowing a non-official Porsche mechanic could be very useful. Another plus is that he's just up the road from my work and not a 45-min slog round the bypass!
