For the first time that I've noticed, Knockhill got a mention in the FT yesterday! Seemed to be quite well informed aswell as it refers to "Knockhill, an often mist-shrouded circuit north-west of Edinburgh in Scotland"!!! The article isn't actually about Knockhill, rather it is about the unhealthy financial state of many of Britain's race circuits (with potential implications for the GB grand prix). If anyone is interested the article is at news.ft.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=FT.com/StoryFT/FullStory&c=StoryFT&cid=1051389530085&p=1012571727288My impression is that, relative to all the big name circuits down south, Knockhill seems to have found a good balance of investing a bit of money (eg on track improvements), but without overspending and then finding themselves in financial problems. It would have been very easy for them to decide to build pit lane garages etc in a bid to keep the touring cars, but they have sensibly avoided this. Is disappointing for us fans not to see James Thompson et al, but I would rather sacrifice them for the long term health of the circuit. I'd hate for this to happen, but if Rockingham ends up as a giant landfill site, and some others in the south east of England are sold on for someone to build houses on the land, then Knockhill would soon get the touring cars back! At the very least, Knockhill's tight purse strings (well this is Scotland after all!) will make sure that the track remains for a very long time to come with any luck. The management seem pretty shrewd with the cash i.e the exact opposite to Octagon type tracks who are constantly on the verge of going under.
It will outlive a lot of English tracks I think - especially some of the "modern/top facilities" white elephants that have started to spring up and flourish for a year before going into terminal decline... (no names!!) ;D
