Nick Sanderson covered this very well on the Knockhill Forum at the beginning of last season, Perhaps he'll expand on my attempt for everyone. - Send to the RAC for a Starter Pack
- Get A Medical
- Do the ARDS test
Thats the least expensive part over, now you have to decide what class of racing you want to take part in. I would suggest XR2's as an entry level for saloons, progressing to Legends or Caterhams or some other National Saloon class (Not Cheap) or straight in at the deep end in a Ford single seater with the upward path into National single seater racing (Not Cheap)

Thanks Charlie I have one question about the ARDS test. What does that involve doing? I know it's obviously driving....but what else? (PS I bet ya it's more exciting than my driving test, which is tomorrow!!!) I would probably hope to start with XR2's, then Caterhams, as they look brilliant fun, then perhaps the larger Saloons if I can't get any further, ie national racing. I am definitely trying out the Renault Clio scholarship next year, start saving now for that...and I hope SEAT run something along the same lines for there Leon Supercopa Cup. Tin tops are my passion, single seaters, nah....

The ARDS test is in two parts - like the road licence - a theory part - lines, flags, regulations etc - and the driving part.
Its pretty basic easy stuff, Nick, John, Neil, Gary, etc all passed no bother :evilgrin: :evilgrin:

Cheeky bugger! Here was my initial 'cheat sheet' of how to start racing: - For anyone who is interested in starting racing but don't know where to start, here is a brief run down of what to do and how much it costs:- Send off to the MSA for a 'Go Racing' starter pack (£40). This contains lots of information, the forms for your race license and an introductory video. You then need to fill in your form and get a 'racing' medical (£60 approx). Once you have this, you need to arrange an ARDS test through Knockhill which involves driving on track and a written test about flags and some scenario questions (£160 approx). Once you pass this, you can then send off for your license (£40). You also need to join a motor racing club - for Scotland, it is the SMRC (£40). You are then ready to start looking for a car and associated equipment. You will need a race suit, helmet, boots & gloves - there are various costs invovled depending on your budget. You are best getting a catalogue from Demon Tweeks to budget accordingly. Then you need to decide what you want to race. The SMRC run classes for XR2's, Legends, Caterhams, Single Seaters etc. For XR2's, contact either Iain Cowie or myself for costs (we also have some cars for sale ready to race) For Legends contact Ally Hunter or speak to Knockhill direct and they should be able to help. An average race entry costs around £120 and then you are ready to race... If you have any questions or need further info, either give me a shout or post a message on the Forum - there are a lot of drivers on this board who will only be too happy to help. Lol, yeah - in a few years' time we might've saved enough to have a season sharing an XR2, maybe One good thing - with my current level of driving skill (near zero ), we'll have plenty of time to save....... :cheese:

touringlegend - yes, the budget - the biggest problem.
I have got a lot of work to do over the winter to convince my sponsors to part with more money. At present, it is looking doubtful that I'll be out in 2003.

I do know of a few businesses I'd approach first which I have relatives either working for or running, but untill I've got a licence and a serious attempt at getting everything together they'd just laugh in my face... Nick, good luck for next year, I hope you can get back out racing again and finsih even higher next year!
