Hi,i am a new member who races in the sports and saloons!Could someone tell me if the format for this series has always been as strange as it is just at the moment. The last few times i have raced apart from the first couple of laps i have been mostly on my own,too fast for the back lot and not quick enough for the front lot. After this years racing(Which was hampered by some TEXT engine going on's)i am spending a small fortune to try and keep with the front lot for next season! While i understand it is my own fault for not doing Legends or XR2's(Which are slightly cheaper than a cossie)is their no way they(SMRC) could limit the engines to be similar at least or is it due to the variety of cars on show?

Its always been the same but there was a greater variety of cars this year!
I cant see what you can do? If you slow John down it will give everyone more of a chance but thats not fair to John and would mean no one could put a challenge to cars like the radicals!
It is a bit unfair but I think it all comes down to money at the end of the day! If I put my fiesta in with the S&S Id be in the same class as John and what chance would I have?
Always good to watch though! Are you the red cossie?
Dave.

If there were more cars then the classes would be split up better. For example, in the 750 stock hatch, they get over 100 entries so their classes are split better according to their class. Like Dave says, if he entered his MKII Fiesta Turbo, it would be up against John Muir's serious Starlet which is no contest... The Cossies were great to watch in 2003 though. The SMRC did try a series called the "Star Cup" way back in 1998/1999 but there weren't enough cars. Correct me if I'm wrong but it was open for all Cossies - Alan Keith made a few appearances and I think Kevin Adam did as well??? I enjoy watching the S & S but I agree that there are too many cars that aren't exactly racing. Only way you'll get that is with more entries or by moving to XR2, Legends, Caterhams or FF Zetecs... Yeah one make classes makes for real dices!
I think the S&S is really a 'one fit' series! For example you could get a really fast car like Ollies and push it to the limits and have fun with other guys on the limit like John and Kevin and the MG car!
Or you could get a nice car just for a bit of fun and potter round at your own quite fast pace like the guy in the mondeo and sierra!
Or you could be a newbie, learning the ropes like Carr in the fiesta last year or the cordoba(?) this year!

No,i have the(Ex Falkland)white number 41 cossie! Not been out that much this season due to somebody(not myself!)deciding to run the car with crazy boost levels which damaged the pistons!I should be around the 500 bhp level with the cash that is being spent for next season and will be in the same class(B)as the MG car and my aim is to compete with him and some of the caterhams.John and maybe Kevin have been around too long to expect to be able to compete against them and having the advantage of having a mechanic at the race with them!If my T4 turbo went i would go home and cry,but if they have a problem they can go down to their garage and pick up a new one! Crazy!!

I dont think they have rows of £800? turbos sitting around lol They'd have to order it from tt like yourself! I had the same problem with my turbo car when I got it, the last owner had set it to unlimited boost so its been rebuilt with a new engine but have been having a few problems getting it running 100% again due to my fuel system - mfi - however I have now changed it to efi and should have more sucess I hope! Dave. P.S. If your looking for a mechanic/helper let me know, I've been thinking about asking around as you've got to get up too early to marshall and I enjoy getting my hands dirty!

Hey Dave - you'd still have to get up at the opposite side of lunchtime that you're used to! ;D Nick www.ns-r.co.uk

<snip>have been having a few problems getting it running 100% again due to my fuel system - mfi - however I have now changed it to efi and should have more sucess I hope! What type of EFI system are you running? If it's a "chipped" OEM one you might want to have a look at the Megasquirt project ( www.bgsoflex.com/megasquirt.html). This is a DIY EFI system that is very easy to modify and is ideal for turbo systems. I'm hoping to convert my Chevy from its carb to run this over the next few months.

Yeah Dave running Ford EEC IV system now! I looked at the megasquirt system and it looks good for the future but I'll stick to the ford system just now! Now that ive gone efi it will be easier to go to third party management, all ill really need is a lambda sensor!

That sounds more like Gillette's latest razor!!
Maybe we should try to get S & S as the first race of the day so they'd have to get there almost as early as us marshals to get through scrutineering!!
I enjoy the S & S, especially as this year has seen good grid numbers. It also keeps our blue flaggers busy too! Particularly with regard to EB....!!

Yeah, I sometimes get pissed off being lapped all the time, but I have at least a couple of cars to race with. Solution : Buy a metro and then we can have a metro challenge at the back of the race!
Cheers
Claire Car No.10 soon to be No. 7 for next year!

It's the oxygen sensor not the South American dance... I've heard a lot of good things about wideband O2 sensors. They really help out when tuning, especially when you are going for max power rather than fuel efficiency. The stock narrow band sensors just flip the voltage when they go from excess oxygen to lack of oxygen (i.e. at stoichiometric - 14:1) whereas max power is often at 13:1 or less. There are a few DIY boards out there for wideband O2 (http://www.diy-wb.com) but a lot use an NGK/Honda sensor which is really hard to get outside of Japan/US and very expensive. There are some new designs that use a Bosch sensor which is common in VWs which is a lot cheaper and easy for us to get (apparently). Most boards also output a narrow band O2 signal for connecting to your stock ECU. I need at least two so if anyone wants to take part in a group buy from Oz/US just let me know...
