Hi all, first post on this really neat site!
OK, here's the gist of it.
I've had a couple of solid seasons in karting since '01, and I like to set myself a new goal for every season. But beyond the British Champs which I *HOPE* to do next year, I can't really see anything that catches my eye in karts (or anything that's anywhere near reasonable price-wise, £50,000 a season for European level, et al ). The other problem is one that stems from the general state of Scottish karting. The senior (+16) version of the class I race in (TKM) died out last year, leaving me three options within karting:
Honda - too slow, basicly the same as the corporate ones you folks have probably driven at some stage or another, and often refered to as "lawnmowers"
Rotax Max - the most reasonable, with big grids, but don't take any skill to drive because of mega sticky tyres (which you have to get a new set of every meeting) and many people who were forced into it becuase of the death of Senior TKM say it just isn't fun to be in
Gearbox - sickeningly fast - but just about as/possibly more expensive than cars, with smaller grids
So the obvious choice is to join you guys at Knockhill (size of Dad's pocket and willingness permitting )
I was one of the 18 karters to pass my ARDS test at Knockhill earlier this year and I'll be sending off for my "Go Racing Pack" in a few days.
But what class would you advise me to go into, bearing in mind that I found the MG TF sportscar more enjoyable than the FFirst (but are those things a reasonable example of single seaters or not?)? Fiesta XR2 and S&SC look like the best bets. What classes can be raced in N. England and/or at national level? Is that Ford Credit Fiesta TOCA support series still going and how different were the cars at SMRC to those in that championship, because it sounded like that was a good cheap national championship. My road car's a wee Nissan Sunny Pulsar, how much tuning would it take to make that competitive in the overall S&SC champs? What's some running costs for the various classes for a season, with the cost of car included separately? Also, would I be able to do testing if I was a member of SMRC in '04, at 15 but in the year of my 16th (birthday's near Christmas!)?
Hope to possibly come down and see some action at the race meeting in two weeks time, maybe see some of you then.
Thanks for your help
