Note sent from Kevin Pick at SMRC.
'Please remember that raceivers are mandatory in 2011 for all XR and ST cars. Would you remind drivers asap they should purchase one. To date very few have done so. SMRC are discounting the cost of purchase having bought stocks. E mail m.how@smrc-uk.com to buy them. Hire cars only need one raceiver. A few will be available to rent on race days, Clerk of the Course, Mike How, will issue them. Regards Kevin'

Latest raceiver info.
Hi All. Please note the following information from Mike How, ========================================================================
Hi Charlie I am awaiting delivery of the new stock and will have them at the first meeting as we didn't want to send them in the post in case they got damaged. There will be a drivers briefing on April 10th and the Raceceivers will be distributed and their use discussed. No decision has been made yet if they will be used at away rounds as it depends on one of our Clerks being there but this will be decided at the Committee Meeting next week. They are £100 to buy and this is the subsidised price. In the event of loss or damage a replacement would cost £150 + VAT. They will cost £20 per meeting to rent which will be cash on the day. Anybody wanting to buy can send me a cheque for £100 made payable to 'SMRC Promotions Ltd.' as soon as possible so that it will be cleared by April 10th, or again, pay cash on the day. Please send to : Mike How 137 Craigmount Avenue North Edinburgh EH4 8BS
Regards Mike

I know that this post comes late in the day under this topic, but I felt strongly enough about this to join this forum, something that I have resisted doing for 2 years.
I understand that rules are rules, and that sometimes in life we should accept them, sometimes decry them, and sometimes (at the very least) we should question them, and since no-one thus far has taken the time to do that, I feel that it falls here.
I would ask all XR/ST drivers to have a think about this, and since we have a meeting before the racing kicks off for 2011, we have the opportunity to have a voice heard on this topic, but in the democracy in which we believe that we live, and in a position where we know that the Mini drivers had a meeting, debated this and then refused to run them for 2011, I feel that we have a duty to do at least the first part of that triumverate.
The feeling from Legends guys is that these are a waste of money contrary to what the pro-raceiver lobby would have you believe, and the Mini people under their rep. clearly believe the same, so I would question why we are being required to run with the system. And required to run without discussion? Or the opportunity to ask questions in an open forum? Or the opportunity to oppose more expense in an already tight financial climate? In short, I have heard nothing good about the system from the championship forced to run with them, or the championship who have recently voted (yes, voted) not to!
We have yet to hear about a proper upside other than perhaps a more clear advice channel for incidents on track, but we already have a system in place for that - marshalls and flags - and when that works properly then it is as complete as a racing driver needs. What we have not been presented with, though, are the downsides. Ask yourself this then - what happens when the crackle of static reveals the message that there is an incident on track just as you line the car up for the turn into Duffus. Do you really need that distraction at the circuit's most critical corner? Now ask yourself this - what happens when the crackle of static reveals the message that there is an incident on the other side of Duffus just as you line the car up for the turn into Duffus, and you are committed. How do you react to that, and what possible benefit is there assuming that the flag marshall is doing his job (something that wasn't the case for the pile-up that has doubtless received many column inches since it occured, and which Charlie refers to earlier); but what potential danger is there in this scenario?
Naturally most of the chatter on these raceivers will likely be benign, and concern cones, safety cars etc, but we should be able to react to these, and have managed to react to these for years thus far. The picture I paint above is unlikely, of course, but that doesn't mean that it is impossible - how many XR related incidents occured at that one corner?
Having marshalled at KH, it may be worth noting that their own circuit radios have a problem with communicating with the marshalls at McIntyres under certain conditions and all you frequently get down there is white noise. I have no knowledge as to the quality and range of the transmissions that we could expect from these units, but it would be very frustrating to spend £100 to find out that they only serve most of the circuit, as that completely defeats the point of their inception.
To finish, the Mini people were also told that they were running this system this year. They felt strongly enough to have a meeting, and with a democratic vote, agreed not to. They have effectively opened the way for the Fiesta drivers to do the same. If there is enough interest in the XR/ST drivers wishing to be heard (and potentially making a difference to our circumstances here), then I should be pleased to have your PM's - remember that one or two will not a democracy make, but a lot of us will, and then whichever way the vote falls, at least we will have had a say. Please tell me that we are not going to completely British about something else and roll over and accept something that we may be opposed to yet again, especially since the SMRC are making a profit out of selling these to us!

A'ernoon folks.
Since I have had replies/PM's to this, I am going to post the reply to those who have communicated with me in open forum for the rest to read. If you know of people who don't use the forum regularly who will be racing in our category then please make them aware of this post.
I have been asked whether or not we could have a meeting about this, and since we have already got one scheduled where the SMRC officials intend to distribute raceivers to those who have paid for them, I propose that we simply add the democratic process to this. If nothing else, and there is strong opposition it will make for interesting debate.
Again, I reiterate that we should (in my opinion) have been given the opportunity to debate this. I would ask that anyone else interested in having their say on this, since we were effectively granted that right when the Mini racers voted against running raceivers, get in touch via PM.
I have mailed Mike How personally and asked if he will sanction the meeting being extended to allow us a democratic element to running the system for 2011.

haggis, here is a really simple idea for all you XR and ST boys that is to police yourselves and slow down considerably from the 1st static yellow to the green and deffo through the waved yellow zone, then we can work in safety trackside without the risk of another car joining the party in the gravel (especially in the wet). From what i have seen is a slight lift when there is a waved yellow and too often contact and passing under yellows. treat a yellow as a virtual safety car for that sector, all series behave when sc boards are out with or without a sc
