I've just been told by Chris Edwards that as of next season the XR2s and the STs will be required to use the Raceiver Radio System.
This is already used by the Legends and I have yet to hear anyone express misgivings about their use. I have only heard good reports about them. (If any of the legend drivers disagree let me know).
If we had had the system fitted then the last meetings disastrous spillage at the top of Duffis would have been broadcast to all and everyone could have slowed down and avoided the carnage that happened. (I was never as happy with sore ribs once I saw the pictures)
It would also help in the safety car situations with everyone knowing if they had to speed up to catch the pack, pass the safety car to allow it to pick up the leader etc.
The price is expected to be around £90 to £100 but I reckon it will be money well spent. (The MSA are reported to be making their use mandatory within the not too distant future)
What do the drivers or marshalls think?
Can the legend drivers let us know what the reception is like arround the track?

As a marshal I think they are a good idea, a yellow flag only tells you there is a problem ahead not what or where exactly. On watching motors tv you actualy hear the message being broadcast short and clear the occasion I heard was a legend in middle of track on exit of hairpin so all drivers knew they had to take it wide. It will also make our job that bit safer (not totaly as there is always the chance of an accident) but if we were dealing with something trackside then drivers would know we were there. So my personal opinion is it is a step in the right direction as long as they are only ever used to warn of incidents on track, but would be interesting to hear opinions of the drivers.

Funnily enough I did state on this here message board after the last meeting that perhaps these would have saved the carnage caused by that particular incident.
The biggest benefit in my eyes would be the severity of an incident would be able to be clarified directly to drivers. A waved yellow flag can have such a wide meaning at the present moment.
The only downside I see is for occasional drivers who do the odd meeting when they can afford to - are they expected to buy one or can they be hired from the SMRC?

Im definitely up for using the raceiver's next year (If I do race lol)
Cant see any downside to it and it will make the races safer for drivers and just as importantly the marshals.

Interesting topic...I've not seen these before and we don't use this technology in the national series but it sounds like a great idea. None of us want to 'walk into accidents' so this sounds like a great idea...as long as costs stay sensible. Charlie - can you give us some more info on this please? For info, in the national Fiestas, it will be mandatory to carry a forward facing camera in 2011 - all cars fitted with the same kit. It is a great idea as it will put paid to a lot of 'driving standards' issues and it will also be good for our TV coverage. Cheers, Nick www.nicksandersonracing.com

sounds like a good idea, it will make our lives easier knowing that the drivers will be aware we are trackside, who knows it might mean less safety cars and less red flags
I dont mind working on a live track if I know the drivers will behave and adhere to the waved yellows. okay our guys are pretty good that way compared to some but that extra bit of safety is welcomed

Having seen the Legends use it on telly, looks (sounds I suppose) good. Where do we get them, how much, can we rent them etc. etc.? If they're the same as the ones on t'internet when you search for raceiver, can we get helmet intercom fitments for them rather than wee earbud things
Cheers Baz

Talk to your series' coordinator within the SMRC. Minis were meant to be trialling them this year but I havent heard anything more about if after the first meeting we had in Feb to discuss tech regs etc.
I think their introduction can only be a good thing personally, especially at Knockhill where you have blind corners. Waved yellow could mean car parked in the gravel at Clarks or it could mean car broadside across the racing line. Wont know which till you're over the apex and staring it in the face.

I havent ever been summonsed to race control so am not aware of the hotness there, but if certain girls in the circuit office were passing out promises of punishment for floppy-cide I'd send the bugger straight in to orbit on the next lap!

Used it for the first time on Sunday. Seems a waste of money. Only time I heard owt was when we carried out the test in the pit lane. Got some crackling when the leaders crossed the finish line to end their race. I thought they were to announce yellow flags etc but they don't.

Got some crackling when the leaders crossed the finish line to end their race. I thought they were to announce yellow flags etc but they don't. SMRC only been using it this year and none of the officials have been to a National Legends race to hear what raceceivers are like after 3 years experience. Nationals come on line 30 mins before race and call specific numbers to their grid position so no traffic jams in the paddock. They tell you every incident and where it occurs, if truth be told they give out too much information. My first race using it they said incident involving 6 cars could be a safety car. I eased and 2 cars passed me I then realised the difference between could be and safety car, safety car no overtaking! With another class using raceceivers it means one of the drivers with National Legends experience could take over the microphone and show the SMRC officials how its done. They just need some experience and I am sure it will prove its worth. Ali
