Got a text from John S last night. Still a bit sore but feeling better now. Gutted over his XR2 - total write off - trying to work out how he gets out in April now. Shell knackered, cage split, hole in the floor from seat brackets - lucky not to exit through there..... Nick - not yet on the Dunlops. ICR hadn't finished the build so was still on road suspension, tyres, wheels. Good shakedown for the car although was taking it easy after my escapade late last year. Stu

DaveC - do you recommend the data logger then? How much do they cost and where did you get it from (if you don't mind me asking). I was looking at one last year but didn't get around to it... Nick The device I bought is a Starlane Athone GPS/R. Its a really neat little piece of kit. I think its primarily aimed at bike racers, but it does have some neat features like logging rpm, speed, position etc., + predictive lap times (i.e. totals best sectors in session for optimum time), shift light. It can also map tracks (although there are some built in tracks). You can have up to 4 split points which are user definable at each track. You can also build a database of every test session you've undertaken. Not only this, but it can be portable and could be used by multiple drivers. Only thing I don't like about it is the interface to your laptop is bluetooth. Actually got it workingreasonably easily, but I'm not a BT fan. The device cost around £500 and I got it from sportsbikeshop.co.uk. Every other data logger system I looked at was well over £1000. They're now up to £514.99 inc UK delivery, probably due to exchange rates, but still a fantastic deal. If you're at any SMRC meetings this year I'd be happy to show you the unit and the laptop software that comes with it. Cheers .. DC

Thanks for the info Dave - I'm hoping to get up to Knockhill this season so will look you up. Sandy had a good piece of equipment in his ST last year which picks up the sectors. Stu - was that you in a Blue ST at Knockhill on a trackday? Someone posted a piccy of one on my forum on two wheels through clarks??? N. www.nicksandersonracing.com

Nick
Was that not the Alfano lap timer? That relies on magnetic strips in beneath the track surface, but this one doesn't plus you can set where you want the splits to be! I had an Alfano, but could not get it working consistently.
Give me a shout next time you're around and I can demo the features I've managed to figure out by then.
Cheers .. DC

Yep, it was me. Very sore neck and shoulders on Sunday / Monday but pain not half as bad as the feeling of being a total plonker! First test session of the season, not driven the car since October, approx 6 laps in and trying to give it the full beans...what was I thinking. All in all I think I was a little unlucky to have the roll as 9 times out of 10 I should have just skipped along the grass and gravel, although this time with it being wet the car just dug in. The car is a total wreck and only positive is that I can salvage the bits (well some of them). What can I say...lesson learned in a big way! Will have to see what happens with the 09 season, as it stands things are not looking good!

Nik,
Doubt it was me - was not going fast enough I think. I'll take a look though later....

John, sorry to hear about that. Glad you're OK but a real shame about the car, I know the feeling. Hope you can somehow get it fixed or get another car for the season.

Thanks Baz. Looks like I will have to start a rebuild pretty sharp. I am looking out for a decent shell so if you happen to hear of one could you give me a shout.
Cheers

John, thought I heard Stephen Porter talking to Ian about a shell if you were interested. May be worth following this up.

Would you do the ST cup with your new car this year John or were you wanting to do XR2's for another year?

Was my first proper time round Knockhill which was interesting. Me being an idiot forgot to change settings so went in to the wet track with a totally dry set up and couldnt figure out why i was going sideways round all the corners!!!! Better by the last session so i could start trying to chase the mini's. Learning experience but good fun. Although some people do take it VERY seriously. Weaving everywhere behind sitting 1/4 " of bumper even though you pull to the side to let them through. But all in a days testing i guess.

Thanks for the offer Blair, that is definetly an option to consider.
If anybody comes across a decent shell I would be keen to know as I am keen to rebuild my XR2.
Dave - I don't want to move to the ST just yet, plus I still have quite a bit to sort before the car is race ready...plenty of £££££! Ideally i would like to get my XR2 sorted as I cant just write it off.
Will see what unfolds...

John - glad to hear you're ok. We've all been there at one time of another and it is a downer but you'll bounce back... Wasn't it yourself that drove my ST41 at Brands in 2007?? I was away so never got the chance to meet you... Good lukc with your XR2 re-build... Nick www.nicksandersonracing.com
