Whats needed to go racing?
Suit - im confused do you need 2 layers or 3 layers suits?
Boots
Gloves
Do you need anything else? Is balaclavas and nomex tops / bottoms mandatory?

When I bought my suit, my understanding was it simply had to be FIA approved - not sure how that relates to layers though.
The only mandatory items seemed to be suit and helmet. Gloves are obviously a good idea and boots too although I'm aware of a couple of people who still race in trainers. Same with balaclavas, nomex underwear stuff etc - all desirable but not mandatory.

Cool cheers Mike.
Does anyone know if half face helmets are ok too? Or does it have to be full face? Maybe full for open top cars and half ok for tin tops?

Yeh you'll get away with an open face in an enclosed car. For me somehow I don't like the though of open face helmets though.
My suit is the Sparco one, it's standard is FIA 8856-2000 (2 layer btw) and my Sparco Helmet is to BS6658-85 Type A/FR. These would do you but it's always worth checking that the FIA don't update standards. The Blue Book details all the acceptable standards anyway.

suit can be 2 or 3 it just depends on how much time u want it to take before you start getting burnt.
helmet can be open face, Mike Jordan even races in the BTCC with an open face.
You don't have to get the other stuff but I would, I race with a balaclava and a top coz u never know when u might set fire to yourself

same risks as trackdays and yet you wear nothing there... Whatever floats your boat Dave. I thought the same to be serious, out in the XR2 with a short sleeve t shirt on.

Whilst on this topic, a mate of mine has launched a range of clothing in fire retardant materials which would be great for the trackday masses and also under races suits. I'm not sure what the rules are regarding advertising on here so PM for me details. (or I can delete post if required)

Feel free to post the info as a new thread in the For Sale forum if you like.
