OK, I said in a previous post I would speak to Chris E about promoting the XR2 series. I have now done so.
In essence, Chris (and the SMRC committee) are happy to listen to any ideas we may have and I have arranged (if I want to) to go along to the next (or a future) committee meeting to speak to them about any proposals. In my mind, any proposals we may have will probably fall into 2 kinds. (a) Sponsoring the series or individual races or (b) advertising the fact that the series exists, when and where the races are, how people can get into it etc.
Re (a), we obviously have Khumo and ColinR organises individual race deals but I do not think that anyone would have any problem if other sponsors we brought on board. The difficulty would be in attracting them.
Re (b) Let's hear your ideas. If these revolve around the SMRC spending money, we would need to convince them that it was worthwhile for Scottish motorsport and that there might be some payback etc.
I should mention at this point the minis and their current set-up. Apparently, BMW approached the club and along with John Clark (the guy who supplies the cars) the whole package (sponsorship, hospitality etc) was put together at little cost to the club. Remember, it cost £20k for a season. The cars don't cost anything like that. The entry fees don't make up all of the difference between the cost of the cars and the £20k they have paid, so essentially, the cost of the whole package has been paid for out of the entry fees.
Let's discuss any ideas we may have, looking at the pros and cons of each (and looking at it from all angles - e.g. the drivers, the spectators, the smrc, Knockhill etc) and see if we can come up with some suggestions which hold water. If we can then I will be delighted to take them to the SMRC.
Fire away !
