Hi Guys,
Well I searched on Yahoo for "Scottish Motor Sport" to see what would come up. Interestingly the first site if I searched all of Yahoo was the SMRC site, but if I searched only the UK, the SMRC site disappeared. However, after scrolling through quite a few of the pages, on either search, no where did I see "ScottishClubRacing". Has anybody else tried this and what results have you had. If the site isn't coming up, is there anyway we can change this ?
John

Yes - adding the site to search engines. Don't know whether GR has had time to do this yet.

Yup, TL - I haven't had time yet, and tbh, I didn't see any point till the site had some content on it, which it didn't until very recently.... I'll do that relatively soon, but I'd still like to have a bit more content on it before inviting to world to see it - we already get plenty of visitors, judging by the counter, anyway

Hmm... guess so, though it's not had much new added for some time Haven't had a lot of time lately, with the online racing and the like, plus haven't had anything new sent to me in ages, so it's stalled a touch... I'll see what I can do, though

might be worth waiting until we have confirmed dates ? these could be put up as news and would represent confirmation of the new season ? (would this also give you a chance to upload some more pics etc ?

Sounds an idea It's not so much the uploading as the scanning of the photos that's taking me so long... I'm pretty bad at getting round to it, it seems! Finally got my scanner installed again just now, so I'll try and get a bit further... still got one meeting plus BTCC to scan, though, and a further three that aren't even processed yet

A quick google for 'Scottish Motor Racing' shows the placeholder for my old website in 2nd place behind the SMRC with ScottishClubRacing in 6th. I'll have a poke at things and see if tweeking the links will shove my junk down the order and push this excellent website up... To get a high rating on google you really need to have a lot of links going to/from other relevant sites. If you can do this then google seems to perceive you as an information hub and rates you above other similar sites. It's definitely worth badgering (in the nicest possible way ) Kevin Pick and the SMRC to get you listed in Wheelspin and linked on the club website...

At least the site shows up on the search engines - I have spent years trying to get ours to show - with no luck

Ouch, search engines are a pain at times... I keep trying to submit this one to them to get it higher up, but it never seems to work properly :blackeye:

I was reading about some things you can do to improve search engine readability last week. It was all fairly common sense (i.e. most website ignore it!) stuff: - No frames, Flash intros or Java navigation
- Long descriptive, different titles on each page
- Valid HTML markup! - use validator.w3.org/
- If possible move away from using HTML tables for page layout and use CSS.
- Sensible link text and lots of them (links that is)
- Always put "alt" and "title" attributes on images. Search engines only read text remember.
- Test with a web browser like Lynx : lynx.browser.org/
- If you are using CSS for layout then put the navigation at the bottom of the page. This helps accessibility for people with disabilities as well.
- Not too long pages. Search engines dont rate text at the bottom of pages.
There are a lot of side benefits of following these recommendations. The usability goes up (die Flash, die!), page load and rendering times come down (CSS, valid markup) and usability for all types of user/web browser should increase. In theory. My company rebuilt our website last summer using most of these ideas (http://www.casltd.co.uk) and now has a pretty good search engine rating - for a tiny IT company Using valid HTML and CSS for layout makes life a lot easier when it comes to writing stuff too. The article I was reading had a link to a web app that analysed a website and displayed a dummy search page that showed roughly what it would look like in Google. Looked useful...but I've mislaid the link. ARgh.

That's interesting - it is saying I am missing 'DocType' that is why my search doesn't do much - um.
