Haven't been keeping up to date with the world of sportscars much recently so missed this:
---------------------------
GT 90s Revival Series
Perhaps predictably SRO has taken a first step towards tapping into the recent heritage in GT racing by launching a two event series intended to feature the GT cars of the 1990s.
No details are yet available of the cars likely to enter the Silverstone and Nogaro events, but SRO claims an expected 20-30 car grid for each, divided between the three categories eligible, all for cars built and entered in races between 1990 and 1999 inclusive:
• GT1: cars corresponding to BPR GT1 - ACO GT1 – FIA GT1 ..
• GT2: cars corresponding to BPR GT2 - ACO GT2 – FIA GT2 . ..
• GT3: cars from single make series such as the Porsche Cup, Venturi Trophy, Ferrari Challenge, Lamborghini Supersport
Each event is planned to feature a pair of 45-minute races with rolling starts, with an obligatory pit-stop between the 15th and 30th minutes, when a driver change is optional. Again, a single tyre manufacturer will be selected.
Olivier Lyonnet: “Back to the roots with the original actors of the worldwide GT success story, we intend to let you discover or re-discover masterpieces of engineering which were all too soon forgotten, with these glorious cars of the past. Action packed and authentic engine noises guaranteed.”
------------------------------------------
If this goes ahead with a decent field I'll definitely make the trip to Silverstone... I was a huge fan of the "proper" GT1/2 era cars like the McLarens, Porsches, Vipers, Lotus Esprits, Marcos and especially the Venturis. Would be even better if someone could drag out one of those old De Tomaso Panteras.
As it's going to happen at the same time as the FIA GT Championship, GT3 and new GT4 Championships it should be a good weekend.
Viva la 90's! I demand a super-touring era Touring Car event as well.
