While it would be a shame to see the XR2s go, an MX-5 series would be pretty cool. Those things get raced everywhere and are successful in all those places. Even in iRacing!

MX5s would be fantastic, if they take off, I'm not sure how they compare costwise with the likes of STs, Minis etc, which took some time to get popular (or didn't, looking at the ST entry list there...), but I've always loved their racing when you get a huge pack of them. Think the XR2s have a few years in them yet though - that grid looks small, sure, but it's still bigger than FFords have usually had for most of the past 10 years, and bigger than many of the Saloons/Sportscar grids of late. Also think the SMRC will want to keep them in their own series (or maybe same races as the Minis if their entries fall as well) for as long as possible, since I imagine sooner or later the 1980 requirement on Classics will get shifted to a later year (it's been 1980-ish for several years now, I'm betting with XR2s in mind!), thus making XR2s eligible - I really can't imagine the owners of those pristine sportscars wanting a pack of rowdy XR2s in their races Good luck to everyone on Sunday, looking forward to hearing about it afterwards!

Let's hope the XR2's are around for a wee while yet.... I have to justify the costs somehow!
On the other hand, a Scottish MX-5 championship could be a good replacement. I had one as a trackday toy for a couple of years and they are great fun. Also pretty unburstable on the mechanical side.

One of my XR2s (the green one) is racing with the new owner as a 'classic' down south this year so they are already counted as such in some series. The other car (spares shell) will still be competing in the Scottish Champs - good luck Sandy - hope the build went well! While the MX5's are definitely popular and cheap to race - they need to allow some exhaust mods to make them sound a bit 'sportier' - they sounded like a muted swarm of bees going past at Cadwell (bees with a habit of bumping into each other pretty often - made us XR2 racers look like saints!). I'm guessing all club motorsport will have a couple of lean years ahead given lay-offs, reduction in sponsorship budgets and fuel costs. Show the dedication of those who remain (not me sadly).

The car will maintain it's new ripple effect down the left hand side for the foreseeable future.

If you get to the Smart Timing website and click on the MyLaps logo in the bottom left corner this will take you direct to our MyLaps webpage which is uploaded before leaving the circuit. Our own webpage is usually loaded with results in pdf format the evening following a meeting, yesterdays results have been posted now. SMART Timing www.smart-timing.co.uk

Smartie,
Is there any chance that SMART will be going 'real time' via MyLaps like TSL do down in Englandshire?
It would be great to be sitting around the track and still have the live timings, especially with mixed grids like the sports and saloons.

Looks to me like at 2 mins 10s into the video, Chris Smiley outdrove himself and put the outside rear wheel onto the grass (check out the roost) nearly taking Tim out on his way into the tyres on the inside. Shame the Knockhill officials didn't have this video before making their decision on the incident I'm pretty sure if it had been a revenge attack, He'd still be picking up pieces of his motor as we type ! Ask him where he got the replacement front panel to allow him to continue racing for the rest of the day and who was it that left his rubber on Covey's door whilst pushing him into the gravel.........
