Have spotted an advert for someone breaking a Mk2 XR2. Is it worth trying to get some parts from it? If so, which parts should I try and get? Haven't spoken to Iain since last year but I deffo need a replacement bumper and maybe a bonnet. How easy/cheaply is it for Iain to get replacement bits? Is he in "the know"? Oh, and for any Hibees tuning in.... 1-0.

Get body parts.... doors, wings, front panels, bonnets, bumpers oh and radiators..
I've seen you drive .. You're going to need them ;D ;D
Iain seems to know where to get most mechanical parts so I wouldn't worry too much on that score.. The only thing that's getting rare are carbs... If there's one on this car then snaffle it. You or he can rebuild them..
If you're needing a bonnet then you're in luck .. I gave him one last week as part of the Mini deal.. It's not perfect but it'll do..

Try getting a new windscreen fitted - the fitters can't seem to get hold of a Mk2 seal which disintegrated when I took the cracked window out.

Be careful if you are buying carbs - you have to get the pre-lean burn one so any XR2s on a late 'D', 'E' or 'F' plate are out...(unless the regs have changed???).

Why not just buy the whole thing, as for sure which-ever bit you don't have spare will break I saw a carb on e-bay the other week...brand new still in it's box too. They're easy to rebuild anyway. Nick the rules stay the same, only pre-lean burn carbs, though why you'd want the later one I wouldn't know as it's smaller. Baz

I did want to buy an MOT failure then strip it for useful panels, but my dad would go ape if I brought another car home!

copied panels are cheap anyway and you'll probably find that even MOT failures will have rust - especially under the bodykit once yhou start stripping...really good shells for example are getting harder to find...(but they're still out there). N.

So Baz does this mean we will see you out this year ? Absolutely. I'll start the season and keep going till I run out of cash. There's a few clashes between the racing and my own club's events, but this year the racing wins since last year I really concentrated on doing the club events...it was worth it too. You planning to come storming through the XR grid in an ST at any time? Baz

I think you will find that non Ford replacement panels are lighter. Also look for glass from some of the specialists as you will find that there are different thicknesses about.

Craig, I rebuilt the whole front end of my car last year with new panels from Hadrian (http://www.carpanels.co.uk/). This was wings, inner wings, cross member and complete front panel. Granted the fit wasn't perfect, but only by a mil or two, nothing huge with only the slightest tap or grind to get it to fit right. I did have to modify the bonnet hinges, as afterwards the bonnet sat too low, but it was never right on my car before. Keeping in mind that this was the first time I'd even attempted anything of this scale and I had to teach myself how to weld and how to spray, I reckon the result isn't too bad. Craig - yep, we've been using them for years - may not be quite as good as genuine Ford parts but they do the job - they don't last long in XR2s anyway! Weight saving etc is irrelevant as you still have to meet the minimum car and car+driver regs... N.

Yeh i think theyre a great idea and a lot lighter on your budget which is very good -
- baz i think youve done a very good job especialy if you done it all yourself for a first time.
- ns-r genuine ford parts are too dear these days anyway and if there just going to get dented scarped etc whats the point in paying those silly prices ( My dad went into our local ford dealership the other day asking for a back bumper for our van and it was triplle figures he also asked for a sensor for the fuel filter which was 70 pound and it looks like it was made on blue peter needless to say he is now trailing up and down scotlands scarp yards )

Cheers Craig. Out of interest, can you still get MK2 Fiesta panels from Ford? I think they've discontinued most other parts, you don't need them for insurance repairs and I think that all XR2's are probably out of warranty by now ;D
