Its called the motorsport valley. Bucks, Beds, Northants, Oxon and Herts and maybe a bit of Cambs, there is a website devoted to it. Its where the money is, they can pool their resources.
I am sure that David Murray had the same problems as we have when he started Ecurie Ecosse, we have 1 circuit and thats it. 1 team thats in major international racing. We are too few in number to warrant a "motorsports glen" in Scotland. All our rising stars have gone down south or to the United States.
If we had more interest in the sport from the Scottish Parliment or a major investor then maybe we could get somewhere but no at the moment. I am down here in Leicestershire finishing off my academic work and I'll probably live down here for the rest of my life. There are very few design jobs or any particular niche jobs anywhere in Scotland as a whole. Oil is fine if you live near Aberdeen and on the East coast, Edinburgh and Galsgow are fine for all round jobs but there are very few niche market jobs around, it is not motorsport alone.
If anyone want to put a case to the MIA about our problems you should really speak to Chris Aylett, he is the CEO and is a very friendly guy, I've met him a couple of times!

I guess that area must be the centre of most of the race tracks in the country ?!

Funnily enough no! Only Silverstone.
Oulton, Donington, Croft- further up Brands- further down Snetterton- Further across
etc etc
Its due to the racing teams and the suppliers all being down around there. North of London but still not too far away to call it northern! Anyone south of Newcastle is Southern! You're an honourary Scot, Nick!

haha - why thank you! I'll leave the Scottish flags to my team mate though!
We're actually working on bringing the BRSCC Ford Fiesta, Ford Saloons and Ford XR Championship to Knockhill in 2008 for you...
Cheers, Nick.

The current "oil boom" may last another three years... After that I've been south for the past 7 years. Art foundation for 1 year, 4 years degree, car design both in Coventry. 1 year trying to do a motorsport masters in Cranfield. Finished in March due to change in career direction. Since sept I've been doing another masters at Loughborough Uni in Industrial Design. You need capital and a reputation to start a design consultancy. I have neither! Every car designer/ product designers problem is that the companies and consultancies demand at least 3 years industrial experience, they only take the best of the best without experience, if they're in a good mood! The chinese go home and are given job we aren't! An employer doesn't care how good your degree is, its how good you sketch! I am OK but not good enough to get me a job! Do you really see Shell or BP going under after 3 years? They'll expand into different areas, organic, sustainable fuels? Bio-diesel?

Those are all very well but they'll pull out like they have done in the past! We used to have all sorts of Series come up to race at Ingliston and Knockhill a while back, they lose interest and don't come back!

You ask them. I have no idea, unless its the distance and the logistics. We stopped coming to the racing when the SMRC started to spread a meeting over saturdays and sundays because we had weddings to do and our team had to work on saturday mornings. This was also a factor with going to Croft or Oulton for us. There were rumblings between the club and the regular drivers because the regulars were having to race at 6pm because they were being bumped to the back of the programme to please the visitors. On occasions the sports/saloons grid were down to 5 or 6 cars on the grid. I have another bug-bear of my own about southern race teams taking up the entire paddock with massive trucks and not allowing us regulars to get a decent space. When running 3 cars at 1 meeting it isn't easy to run them in the space of 2 cars! 3 tow cars etc.

Maybe it is just English drivers and you Scots are more enthusiastic, but an awful lot of drivers just don't like travelling far - even to circuits that aren't far away!
Anyway Heinicke, if you're in the Leicestershire area Mallory must be fairly close to you as well...
