I should imagine a season would be achievable on less than 5 - 6k easily, but I also guess it dictates how well you can do. Nick's tried to sell his car at £8k hasn't he ? whereas you can pick up one for under £2k.

I think its fatal looking at the cheapest race car you can get and expecting a full season can be done for a comparable price.
XR2's and Legends can be relatively cheap to buy but because all the cars are to the same regulations they are basically all capable of the same lap times it is purely the driver who makes the difference. Given they are competitive classes you will get damage so you have to factor that into your estimates at the start of the season. I would also suggest you double that estimate and if it doesn't happen then you are pleasantly surprised.
I did a full season, away rounds etc. last year and had my most expensive season so far. Based on last years costs I was £ 500 better off racing the Hire drive Radical than my own Legend in the March meeting.
Personally I would recommend hiring cos you get full experience of the team behind you and if you try Caterhams or Radical they ain't too competitive classes ie less chance of damage.

Thanks Andrew, As a newcomer, I have no idea of costs and that was a great help. Its not a case of trying to minimise the costs but more a case of trying to go in with both eyes open! How do XR2's compare with Legends or Pheonix/FF Ford 1600? Colin

Hey Andrew, was having a quick look through your cost breakdown. Polybushes?? Since when have they been allowed? I thought we all had to run standard rubber jobs from ford or their pattern match counterparts.
A season is acheivable for a good bit less than £5K if you run the car yourself...I know, I've done it. My present calculations for a budget, running it myself, are around 5K...that includes throwing tyres at the thing every round and even some spare for damage! Mind you, I have to spend a grand just before I take to the grid....hance why I'm not out this year...again!

Hi Barry - the regs changed this year.
From the new regs:
5.8.1.5 Rubber suspension bushes may be replaced with uprated polyurethane bushes, and only in the Front Lower Control Arm (inner bush), Tie Bar, Rear anti-roll Bar and Rear Trailing Arm.

A legend im told will cost from anyhting between 8k and 20k and im sure spare parts are also more expensive. Although your more likely to take some damage in an xr2 than in a legend or a fford. Its widely agreed that xr2s are the cheapest series though
