Not sure it isn't the Kumho stickers holding my car together......Hope the new ones are sticky! At least if the STs are in front I won't get ST sandwiched like I did in race 2 last year. Will we all be using Kumhos to start this year or will the switch over be from race 1? Just when I thought I'd got the hang of the tyre-pressures - doh!

Does anyone have a definitive answer to this one yet?
I've managed to squirrel away a budget for a couple of sets on new tyres for the start of the season, and the last thing I want to do is buy Kumho's if the championship might go to Yokohama.
For me, I'd much prefer running Yokohama. That's based on no experience with with the XR2..... but with plenty in the tyre industry.

Had a read of Wheelspin again, I think it's just the way the ST / XR2 starting thing is worded, it says something like "ST's will still race with XR2s starting behind them." I think there should be a comma between XR2s and starting.

I think there should be a comma between XR2s and starting. See below from the SMRC forum. Looks like it would make sense to hold off on tyres for now "See from Wheelspin that a new control tyre will be 'phased-in' in 2010 for the XR2s. Any further info or is it 'under negotiation'? I'm guessing Kumhos will be good until end of 2010? Also see STs will be starting in front or was that a typo? Cheers all. The Fiesta regulations for 2010 will see XR2s start races ahead of STs. I must have written the news section in Wheelspin a little ambiguously if you think it read differently. Any changes to XR2 tyres are yet to be finalised. Kevin Pick" DC

It's been confirmed that the Yokohama is the new tyre. Same model/compound as the minis. Not sure what size though - 175/60 I'd imagine.
Not bad timing from my point of view as I needed two or three new tyres anyway.
Costs may actually be cheaper than the Kumho too.

Cheers for the update Mike........ good to get confirmation at last. If the same as the Mini's they'll be A048's, and it obviously makes sense to stick with 175/60x13's due to wheel arch clearance etc. One thing though.... Yokohama make these in both Med & Soft compounds, so any news on which one?

The Yokohama's look like quite a good tyre, so be interesting to see how the XR2's get on with them.
Although from my racing experience what I normally thought was a good Kumho that would last me a season turns out to be by it's best.

The minis use the medium compound but it says in their regs that the tyres must be supplied by Wheels Around. Apparently the rolling diameter is slightly larger on the Yokohamas so arch clearance may be a slight issue to some people. Iain reckons the lap times may come down by as much as a second. Better get those neck muscles strengthened!

..............Hopefully its the same as the XR Challenge down south as Im looking to race in that at Cadwell also lol. Martin, don't even consider an XR challenge round, you will be so much slower than they are. The English XR's run to a very different spec than we do, there is no effective scrutineering and so cheating is rife with engine mods, lsd's and other things we do not do. The last time it was tried it also ended up in a Scotland Vs England battle with around 4 cars totalled by deliberate punts. Cheers Charlie

Cheers for the advice Charlie.
The idea just came from watching Winchester's video at Silverstone when he was leading in his XR2 and when I read the regs on the fordracinguk site they seemed to be the same as our cars but youve got way more knowledge about this than I ever will lol. Thankfully aint sent any forms etc away yet.
I'll admit I dont know if I could hold back if I had the chance to gently batter an english xr2 lol.

The idea just came from watching Winchester's video at Silverstone when he was leading in his XR2 That was an SMRC XR2 away race... Nothing to do with the English Fiestas..... I think tho this is a good move. The Yoko is a good all round tyre and I agree with comments that it could well knock a second or so off lap times. That in itself is good cos it then puts the XR2s back on a par with the Minis ... ;D DickW

Good choice of tyre! Given the performance difference, I can only assume there's no "phasing in". Does this mean we all need to buy a set of new tyres in April?

Barry
I think the last time the tyre spec changed it was permitted to run the older tyre alongside the newer spec tyre. Obviously there is a perfomance differential (hopefully positive) between the current Kumho's and the new Yokohamas, so this may be the way its handled again this year. We really need someone from the SMRC (or more likely Charlie) to chime in on the transition options.
Update:Another piece of news straight from Charlie. The Kumhos can be run for the first meeting only.

Interesting move, hope Wheels Around are prepared for a busy weekend! I reckon that Iain is right, probably a second a lap faster. The Mini's have a stupid amount of grip on those tyres, albeit they're got a bigger footprint but then the cars are 230Kg heavier. They might also have more grip in the wet. More importantly, might put us closer to the ST's which could lead to mixed grids next year without such a big difference in performance. I'm quite looking forward to this change, thought my wallet isn't Ach so what. Baz
